In 1959 Janet Barker first saw the rising pictures on a school visit to the Society for Cancer Research in Arlesheim, Switzerland. The Pictures were of mistletoe from various host tree using different metal reagents and she was fascinated to see that a juice thread in this way would reveal insights into the plant and its relation to the planets. Although she had wanted to be a farmer from the age of four, she knew immediately that one day she would work with this method.
Janet was born and raised in England, attending Michael Hall Rudolf Steiner School before doing a practical training in agriculture prior to graduating with several diplomas in animal husbandry from two agricultural colleges.
She worked in the United Nations (FAO) in Chile and then in 1970 joined the Ita Wegman Clinic in Arlesheim to help in the preparation of herbal medicines. Here she began her lifetime involvement with the rising pictures and her experience and knowledge are being passed on in this Handbook. She retired in 2004.
